Master of Arts in Liberal Arts & Sciences (MALAS) - Requirements

Program Requirements

In addition to meeting the basic requirements for the Master of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences as described in Part Four of the SDSU Graduate Bulletin, the student must complete a graduate program of 30 units, 15 units of which must be in 600- and 700-level courses. All programs must be approved by the MALAS director in consultation with the Graduate Liberal Arts and Sciences Committe. Up to 15 units of coursework can be taken at the 500-level.

Summary of Requirements

The total program includes:

  • MALAS 601 (3 units)
  • MALAS 600A, 600B, 600C, or 600D in any combination (9 units) - Each course may be repeated once with new content and, in excess of nine units, can be used for elective credit.
  • 15 units of electives selected with approval of the MALAS director
  • A culminating work through thesis, project, or exam

    A MALAS MA Thesis is a 45-75 page essay, an original piece of scholarship/writing or creative writing, authored in collaboration with three professors.

    Students must complete MALAS 799A (Thesis or Project).

    A MALAS Project (Art Exhibit, School Curriculum Innovation, Performance, Documentary Film, etc... the sky is the limit.

    The paperwork for the MALAS Project is the same as the MALAS MA Thesis.

    Students must complete MALAS 799A (Thesis or Project).

    The MALAS Comprehensive Exam is based on three areas of emphasis of your choosing. These areas can be independent of each other or interrelated.

    Students must complete MALAS 795.

    The exam uses a Distinction/Pass/Fail standard and is administered all on the same day over six hours; each exam is an hour and fifty minutes long, with a break between each question.
